Key Areas of Responsibility

The Assistant Manager will oversee complex occupational health cases, guide team performance and help ensure that Imperial’s health programs remain consistent with regulatory requirements, internal standards and operational needs.

Clinical Case Oversight

Provide clinical leadership for fitness-for-work determinations, return-to-work planning and accommodation reviews while ensuring that employer-facing documentation uses appropriate functional language.

Complex Case Escalation

Serve as an escalation point for disputed or complicated case management files and help determine when matters require additional legal, clinical or management review.

Medical Surveillance

Oversee occupational health surveillance programs and confirm that baseline testing, recurring assessments and jurisdiction-specific monitoring obligations are completed.

Team Leadership

Provide daily direction, coaching and performance management to occupational health nurses, case management advisors and contracted clinical resources.

Regulatory Compliance

Ensure occupational health services align with Canadian workplace health requirements, workers’ compensation practices, privacy obligations and Imperial’s operational integrity standards.

Program Transformation

Support standardized systems, centralized case management, role consolidation, change planning and other initiatives intended to improve the future Occupational Health Department model.

Business Partnership and Risk Management

The Assistant Manager will work closely with Human Resources and Legal teams on disability, accommodation and return-to-work matters. Clinical recommendations must be communicated alongside any identified escalation needs so that the appropriate functions can address medical, legal and operational considerations in parallel.

The role may also represent Occupational Health in discussions with site management and Safety, Health and Environment professionals. Additional responsibilities include supporting departmental budgets, managing vendor service expectations and identifying situations where third-party disability or case management providers operate outside their agreed scope.

Skills That May Help Candidates Succeed

This opportunity requires a combination of clinical expertise, regulatory awareness and people leadership. The successful candidate must be able to make sound operational decisions while recognizing when issues fall outside occupational health authority and require escalation.

Occupational Medicine

Advanced understanding of workplace health, fitness-for-work assessment, medical surveillance, disability management and occupational exposure considerations.

Clinical Leadership

The ability to review complex files, provide work direction, maintain professional standards and guide multidisciplinary occupational health practitioners.

Regulatory Knowledge

Familiarity with occupational health and safety requirements, workers’ compensation processes, privacy legislation and human rights obligations across Canadian jurisdictions.

Stakeholder Management

Strong communication and partnership skills for working with HR, Legal, site leadership, safety professionals, vendors and global occupational health teams.

Operational Decision-Making

The ability to manage competing priorities, evaluate clinical and business risk and escalate matters that exceed delegated authority or occupational health scope.

Qualifications, Travel and Employee Benefits

Imperial requires postgraduate training and qualifications in Occupational Medicine or Public Health, such as FRCPC certification, CCBOM, FCBOM or an equivalent credential. Candidates should have two to five years of supervisory or management experience, preferably in an industrial or natural resources occupational health setting.

Applicants must hold current authorization to practise in the relevant clinical discipline, with Alberta licensure required and Ontario registration considered an asset. Periodic travel to refining, offshore, oil sands and pipeline sites is required, and the role may occasionally support clinically urgent escalations outside standard business hours. Imperial also lists competitive compensation, mentorship, relocation support, flexible hours and a work-from-home policy.

How to Apply

Interested candidates should apply through Imperial’s official careers website. Application materials should clearly outline occupational medicine or public health credentials, current clinical licensure, management experience and responsibility for workplace health, disability, surveillance or case management programs.

Applicants who receive an employment offer must be eligible to work in Canada on a regular full-time basis without restrictions affecting the start date. Imperial may require valid proof of work eligibility and offers reasonable accommodation during the recruitment process. Joblyz does not collect applications or participate in hiring decisions.
