RBC is hiring a Director, Third Party Risk Practices for a full-time position in Toronto, Ontario. This senior Group Risk Management role is responsible for strengthening the bank’s enterprise-wide approach to third-party risk, including the processes, governance models, applications, controls and data used to manage external relationships.
The successful candidate will help ensure that RBC’s Third Party Risk Management program is consistently applied across suppliers, intragroup arrangements and other third-party relationships. The position combines operational risk leadership, process design, technology ownership, regulatory alignment and enterprise change management.
About This Third-Party Risk Leadership Role
The Director will help shape and maintain RBC’s enterprise third-party risk practices while ensuring that the program reflects the bank’s risk appetite and applicable regulatory expectations. The role requires a broad understanding of how third parties can introduce operational, cybersecurity, resilience, compliance and concentration risks across a large financial institution.
This position also acts as the product owner for RBC’s third-party risk applications and tools. The Director will work closely with Operational Risk Shared Services and other teams to manage updates, support adoption and ensure that systems remain aligned with the evolving needs of the Third Party Risk Management program.
Key Areas of Responsibility
The Director will oversee the continued development of RBC’s enterprise third-party risk framework while coordinating with first-line and second-line risk teams. Responsibilities include governance, process design, change management, regulatory support and the use of internal and external data to improve risk decisions.
Enterprise Process Design
Design, develop, deploy and maintain third-party risk processes that can be applied consistently across suppliers, intragroup relationships and other external arrangements.
Governance and Risk Appetite
Provide direction on governance practices and ensure that third-party risk activities remain aligned with RBC policies, global regulations and established risk appetite.
Technology Ownership
Act as product owner for third-party risk applications and tools, supporting maintenance, updates, change delivery and consistent adoption across the enterprise.
Risk Intelligence
Improve the use of internal and external data sources so that RBC can identify emerging third-party risks and respond more proactively to changing conditions.
Regulatory and Audit Support
Support regulatory examinations, internal audits and remediation activities connected to the Third Party Risk Management program and its supporting controls.
Enterprise Change Management
Lead program adoption, training and change initiatives while coordinating with risk teams, procurement, supplier management offices and centres of governance.
Cross-Functional Risk Integration
The Director will work across RBC’s broader operational risk structure to ensure that third-party practices are integrated with related programs. These may include business continuity, cyber and technology risk, operational resilience, artificial intelligence, digital assets and software-as-a-service governance.
The role also involves managing or participating in risk forums that bring together stakeholders from different parts of the bank. These forums help align priorities, resolve policy or implementation questions and provide senior management with updates on the progress of strategic Third Party Risk Management initiatives.
Skills That May Help Candidates Succeed
This position requires an experienced risk leader who can design enterprise processes, influence senior stakeholders and manage change across complex organizational structures. Candidates should be comfortable working with detailed control requirements while maintaining a broader strategic view.
Strong knowledge of the complete third-party risk lifecycle, including due diligence, risk assessment, monitoring, governance, issue management and regulatory expectations.
Experience developing practices that align operational activities with policies, risk appetite, control standards and global regulatory requirements.
The ability to review existing operating models, identify weaknesses and design more consistent, scalable and effective risk management processes.
Experience leading enterprise adoption, training, stakeholder engagement and implementation activities across multiple functions and risk domains.
Advanced quantitative and analytical skills for evaluating complex information, identifying risk trends and developing practical recommendations.
Experience, Leadership and Workplace Details
RBC requires at least ten years of progressively responsible experience within the financial services industry. Candidates should have direct exposure to operational risk management, enterprise mandates and the third-party risk lifecycle, together with leadership experience in process design or process re-engineering.
Applicants should also understand Governance, Risk and Compliance practices gained through first-line or second-line risk roles. Direct or indirect team leadership experience is preferred, while Six Sigma or a professional risk management qualification is considered an asset. The position is based at 20 King Street West in Toronto and follows a 37.5-hour work week.
