Key Areas of Responsibility

The role combines precision inspection, equipment programming, calibration coordination, technical reporting, and continuous improvement within the metrology laboratory.

CMM Programming

Program and operate coordinate measuring machines to inspect complex components with demanding dimensional requirements and very tight tolerances.

Gear Measurement

Use and program specialized gear measurement equipment to evaluate component geometry, accuracy, and compliance with engineering requirements.

Manual and Optical Inspection

Work with optical measurement systems, profile projectors, height gauges, and other manual inspection tools when appropriate for the component.

Inspection Reporting

Prepare clear inspection reports based on critical characteristics identified in technical drawings and engineering specifications.

Calibration and Maintenance

Coordinate equipment calibrations and help identify or resolve maintenance issues that may affect measurement reliability or laboratory availability.

Laboratory Improvement

Apply 5S principles to organize the workspace, improve laboratory efficiency, maintain equipment readiness, and support continuous improvement.

Experience and Technical Requirements

Tesla requires at least five years of experience programming and operating coordinate measuring machines. Candidates should have a strong understanding of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing according to ASME Y14.5 and practical experience measuring components with tolerances expressed in microns.

Experience with Calypso and MCOSMOS is considered an asset. Applicants should also be able to design inspection fixtures that hold parts securely during measurement. Experience designing hard gauges may be beneficial, although it is not identified as a mandatory qualification.

Skills That May Help Candidates Succeed

The position requires a combination of technical metrology knowledge, careful organization, practical problem-solving, and the ability to deliver accurate results under changing schedules.

Precision Measurement

Strong knowledge of dimensional inspection methods is important when evaluating complex parts and working with tolerances measured in microns.

GD&T Interpretation

The ability to interpret geometric controls, datums, feature relationships, and drawing requirements supports accurate inspection planning and reporting.

Fixture Design

Designing stable and repeatable inspection fixtures can help ensure parts are positioned correctly throughout the measurement process.

Organization and Multitasking

Strong planning skills help technicians manage multiple inspections, equipment needs, reporting duties, and changing engineering priorities.

Adaptability Under Pressure

The technician should be able to remain accurate and focused while working with tight deadlines, shifting schedules, and unfamiliar measurement challenges.

Work Environment, Compensation and Benefits

This is a full-time position based in Langley within Tesla’s engineering and manufacturing operations. The technician will work closely with engineers, machinists, and other technical employees while using a broad range of precision inspection equipment in a research and development setting.

Tesla lists expected compensation of $19.53 to $47.88 CAD per hour, along with potential cash and stock awards. Eligible full-time employees may also receive health, dental, vision, life and disability coverage, an RRSP with employer matching, an employee stock purchase plan, paid time off, paid holidays, employee assistance resources, parental programs, and additional discounts and benefits.

How to Apply

Candidates should review the complete position description on Tesla’s official careers website before applying. Application materials should clearly describe experience with CMM programming, precision inspection, GD&T, fixture design, calibration, technical reporting, and tight-tolerance manufacturing work.
