Imperial is hiring a Reservoir Engineer (EIT) for an on-site engineering position in Edmonton, Alberta. This early-career opportunity supports the Cold Lake Oil Sands operation and focuses on brownfield drilling, reservoir performance analysis and production optimization.
The successful candidate will use reservoir engineering, forecasting and economic analysis to identify and advance infill drilling opportunities. Working with geoscience, facilities engineering, operations and other reservoir specialists, the engineer will help move opportunities from initial evaluation through well start-up and ongoing performance monitoring.
About This Reservoir Engineering Opportunity
The Reservoir Engineer will support the continued development of Imperial’s Cold Lake asset, one of Canada’s established in-situ oil sands operations. The position is centred on evaluating existing producing areas and identifying opportunities to improve resource recovery through additional wells, operating changes and production optimization.
This role is suitable for an engineer with early professional experience in heavy oil reservoirs who wants to expand their knowledge of thermal recovery, reservoir surveillance and development economics. Assignments will require both detailed technical analysis and effective coordination with multidisciplinary teams.
Key Areas of Responsibility
The position covers opportunity generation, technical evaluation, economic prioritization and reservoir performance monitoring. The Reservoir Engineer will contribute throughout the development process rather than focusing on only one stage of a drilling program.
Drilling Opportunity Development
Work with technical and operational teams to identify and mature brownfield infill drilling opportunities within the Cold Lake asset.
Well Performance Forecasting
Develop production forecasts using analytical methods, reservoir data and simulation tools to estimate the potential performance of proposed wells.
Economic Evaluation
Assess the commercial potential of drilling opportunities and help prioritize projects according to expected production, cost and business value.
Reservoir Surveillance
Monitor reservoir and well performance, evaluate production trends and provide technical insights on program results to management and project teams.
Production Optimization
Support initiatives intended to improve well output and thermal recovery performance across several technologies used at Cold Lake.
Cross-Functional Execution
Collaborate with geoscience, reservoir, facilities and operations teams from opportunity generation through drilling, well start-up and operation.
Thermal Recovery and Heavy Oil Development
Candidates should understand the principles of heavy oil production and thermal recovery. Relevant technologies may include cyclic steam stimulation, steamflood and steam-assisted gravity drainage, together with cold-flow production methods used in some heavy oil developments.
The engineer will apply this knowledge when reviewing well performance, comparing recovery approaches and recommending development or optimization opportunities. Experience with infill drilling, reservoir simulation and analytical forecasting would be particularly useful when evaluating the technical and economic potential of proposed projects.
Skills That May Help Candidates Succeed
This position requires a combination of engineering analysis, economic judgement and teamwork. Candidates should be able to manage several technical priorities while communicating results clearly to people from different disciplines.
Knowledge of reservoir behaviour, well performance, production forecasting and the engineering principles used to evaluate heavy oil developments.
An understanding of CSS, steamflood, SAGD or related processes and how operating conditions influence reservoir and well performance.
The ability to compare opportunities using expected production, development cost, timing, uncertainty and overall business value.
Strong analytical skills for interpreting reservoir information, recognizing performance trends and developing technically supported recommendations.
The ability to work effectively with geoscientists, facilities engineers, operations personnel and other reservoir professionals under changing priorities.
Education, Experience and Career Support
Imperial requires a bachelor’s degree in Engineering, preferably Petroleum, Chemical or Mechanical Engineering. Candidates should be eligible for registration or already registered as an Engineer-in-Training or Professional Engineer with APEGA and have approximately two to four years of heavy oil reservoir experience.
Experience with reservoir surveillance, economic analysis and production forecasting is required. Imperial also lists competitive compensation, training, mentorship, relocation support where required and access to employee resource groups. Reserves evaluation experience is considered an asset rather than a mandatory qualification.
