About the Data Center Technician Role

As a Data Center Technician, successful candidates will help install, maintain, troubleshoot, and decommission server and networking hardware while supporting the daily operation of Microsoft’s cloud infrastructure. Key Areas of Responsibility

The position supports multiple aspects of day-to-day data centre operations while following Microsoft’s standard operating procedures and safety requirements.

Hardware Deployment

Prepare, stage, install, configure, and perform startup or shutdown activities for servers, storage devices, racks, switches, and related hardware following documented procedures.

Diagnostics and Troubleshooting

Identify hardware faults, perform diagnostics, replace defective components, and restore equipment while minimizing disruption to data centre operations.

Infrastructure Maintenance

Carry out hardware refreshes, equipment decommissioning, simple system changes, memory upgrades, and cable management activities using established processes.

Operational Compliance

Complete assigned work orders while following Microsoft policies, security requirements, quality standards, and key performance indicators.

Safety and Security

Participate in safety briefings, use appropriate personal protective equipment, complete required training, and follow physical security and data management procedures.

Team Collaboration

Work closely with technicians, vendors, engineers, and other operational teams while sharing knowledge, supporting shift transitions, and contributing to continuous improvement.

Qualifications and Technical Requirements

Applicants must have a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent qualification together with at least one year of experience supporting IT equipment or related technology. Microsoft also requires basic knowledge of computer hardware and components, along with the ability to meet Microsoft Cloud Background Check requirements and obtain Government of Canada Reliability Status security clearance.

Additional experience working in production data centres, mission-critical environments, or supporting enterprise IT infrastructure may be beneficial. Certifications related to computer hardware, networking, structured cabling, or Microsoft technologies may also be considered an advantage where applicable.

The role may require rotating 12-hour shifts, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays. Occasional travel of up to 25 percent may also be required to support other Microsoft data centre locations. Microsoft lists typical annual base salary ranges between CAD $59,700 and CAD $95,700 for ATR-C positions and CAD $73,200 to CAD $119,600 for ATR-D positions across Canada.
