Microsoft is hiring an Innovative Data Platform Solution Engineer for a full-time position in the Greater Toronto area of Ontario. This technical pre-sales role focuses on helping commercial customers modernize databases, analytics and data platforms using Microsoft Fabric, Azure Databases, Azure Databricks, Purview and related cloud technologies.
The successful candidate will act as a trusted technical advisor, working directly with customer decision-makers, engineering teams and platform leaders to design secure and scalable solutions, resolve technical blockers and accelerate database and analytics projects into production.
About This Data Platform Solution Engineering Role
The Innovative Data Platform Solution Engineer works within Microsoft’s Cloud & AI organization and supports commercial customers with data modernization initiatives. The role covers database, analytics, data warehouse, data lake, governance and real-time intelligence scenarios across Microsoft’s cloud platform.
The position combines technical sales, architecture design and hands-on customer engagement. Solution Engineers may lead proof-of-concept projects, hackathons and architecture workshops to help customers validate solutions before production deployment.
Key Areas of Responsibility
The role combines technical sales, customer architecture guidance and hands-on data platform modernization. The successful candidate will help customers evaluate, design and deploy solutions across Microsoft’s database and analytics portfolio.
Technical Sales
Drive technical sales discussions with customer decision-makers using demonstrations, proof-of-concepts and solution design to support production deployments.
Architecture Workshops
Lead hackathons, architecture workshops and other hands-on engagements that accelerate customer adoption of Microsoft cloud data platforms.
Solution Design
Build trusted relationships with customer platform leaders and co-design secure, scalable database and analytics architectures.
Technical Blocker Resolution
Identify and resolve technical objections or deployment blockers while collaborating with Microsoft engineering teams when deeper product support is required.
Data Platform Modernization
Help customers migrate and modernize databases, data warehouses, analytics workloads and on-premises data platforms into Microsoft Azure.
Technical Thought Leadership
Represent Microsoft in database and analytics communities, customer forums and technical conversations while sharing expertise and industry insights.
Microsoft Fabric, Azure Databases and Analytics
The Solution Engineer is expected to maintain deep technical knowledge across Microsoft Fabric, including OneLake, Data Warehouse, real-time intelligence, business intelligence and Copilot capabilities. The role also covers Azure Databricks, Microsoft Purview Data Governance and Azure database technologies such as Azure SQL Database, Cosmos DB and PostgreSQL.
Candidates may also work with customers migrating legacy or competing environments, including Teradata, Netezza, Oracle Exadata, Hadoop platforms, Snowflake, BigQuery and Amazon Redshift. Understanding both Microsoft and competing technologies can help support complex modernization decisions.
Skills That May Help Candidates Succeed
This opportunity may suit a senior technical pre-sales or consulting professional with strong database, analytics and cloud architecture expertise who enjoys working directly with enterprise customers.
Strong expertise with Azure SQL Database, Cosmos DB and PostgreSQL, including migration, modernization and development of new AI-enabled applications.
Experience with Microsoft Fabric, Azure Databricks, Purview and modern data warehouse, data lake, real-time analytics and reporting architectures.
The ability to lead technical discovery, demonstrations, proof-of-concepts and architecture discussions that support customer purchasing and deployment decisions.
Experience migrating enterprise data warehouses, big data environments and on-premises platforms to modern cloud architectures.
The ability to build trusted technical relationships, explain complex architecture decisions and guide customers through secure and scalable deployments.
Qualifications, Work Model and Compensation
Microsoft requires either a master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or a related field with at least three years of technical pre-sales or consulting experience; a bachelor’s degree with at least four years of relevant experience; five or more years of technical pre-sales or consulting experience; or equivalent professional experience.
Preferred qualifications include six or more years of technical pre-sales, consulting or technology delivery experience, at least four years working with cloud, hybrid or on-premises infrastructure and strong expertise in database and analytics technologies. Experience working with financial services or other highly regulated industries is also preferred.
Schedule and Salary
The position is full time and follows a hybrid work model requiring two days per week in the office. Travel is expected to range between 25% and 50% depending on customer and business requirements.
Microsoft lists a typical Canadian base salary range of $96,000 to $177,600 CAD per year for this Solution Engineering IC4 position. Actual compensation may vary based on experience, qualifications and other applicable factors.
