Critical Environment Operations Intern – Microsoft, Greater Toronto, ON
Location: Toronto, ON | Company: Microsoft
Microsoft is hiring a Critical Environment Operations Intern in the Greater Toronto Area, Ontario, for a six-month internship supporting the infrastructure behind the company’s cloud services and online platforms.
This fully on-site opportunity is designed for students completing a technical preparatory year or attending a technical college. The internship introduces candidates to data centre operations, electrical and mechanical systems, facility monitoring, preventive maintenance, safety procedures, and incident response under the guidance of experienced professionals.
About the Critical Environment Operations Internship
The position is part of Microsoft Cloud Operations and Innovation, the organization responsible for operating the physical infrastructure that supports services such as Microsoft Azure, Microsoft 365, Xbox, OneDrive, and Bing. Critical environment teams help keep data centre facilities safe, reliable, and available by monitoring essential electrical, mechanical, fire protection, and building systems.
During the internship, the successful candidate will learn how data centre equipment is operated, inspected, documented, and maintained. The role combines supervised technical work with administrative responsibilities, giving the intern practical exposure to operating procedures, maintenance records, facility safety, and the systems used to track equipment and work orders.
Key Areas of Responsibility
The intern will support qualified technicians and facility personnel while developing an understanding of the procedures used to maintain a critical operating environment.
Equipment Monitoring
Assist with basic inspections of electrical, mechanical, fire and life-safety equipment to identify abnormal conditions, performance concerns, or potential safety risks.
Preventive Maintenance
Support planned, predictive, and corrective maintenance activities by preparing materials, following approved procedures, and completing assigned tasks under supervision.
Work Order Tracking
Use Microsoft’s computerized maintenance management system to review equipment records, document completed work, and help process maintenance requests.
Emergency Response Support
Assist with the monitoring of abnormal facility conditions and follow established emergency operating procedures while working with experienced team members.
Incident Documentation
Gather relevant information following equipment or facility events and contribute to incident timelines, root-cause reviews, and follow-up action items.
Safety and Escalation
Learn the risks associated with critical systems, document issues discovered during maintenance, and escalate concerns to the appropriate technician or supervisor.
Education and Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must have a high school diploma or an equivalent qualification, be at least 18 years old, and be studying in a technical preparatory year or at a technical college. Microsoft also requires candidates to have basic knowledge of electrical systems, mechanical systems, or both.
The successful candidate must be able to meet Microsoft, customer, and government security-screening requirements. This includes completing the Microsoft Cloud Background Check and being eligible to obtain Government of Canada Reliability Status. The screening process may involve verification of identity, education, professional credentials, references, credit history, and criminal background.
Skills That May Help Candidates Succeed
This internship may suit candidates who are comfortable learning in a technical environment and who can follow detailed safety, maintenance, and documentation procedures.
A basic understanding of electrical or mechanical equipment can help the intern recognize how data centre systems operate and interact.
The ability to follow operating procedures, recognize risks, and ask for guidance is important when working around critical facility equipment.
Clear written records help maintenance teams track completed work, identify recurring issues, and coordinate follow-up activities.
Effective written and spoken English can support collaboration with local technicians, supervisors, contractors, and regional or global teams.
A strong interest in developing practical technical skills can help candidates benefit from supervised training and exposure to data centre operations.
Work Environment and Schedule Expectations
This is a fully on-site position based in the Greater Toronto Area. The work may involve frequent standing, walking, lifting, and performing tasks at height, with or without equipment assistance. Candidates should review these physical expectations before applying and consider whether they can perform the essential duties safely.
The position may require flexibility to work outside standard business hours, including some weekends or holidays. Travel is expected to remain below 25 percent.
