Imperial is hiring an experienced Mine Plant Machinery Engineer for a full-time, on-site position based in Edmonton, Alberta. This senior engineering opportunity supports the Kearl Operations Technical team and focuses on improving the reliability, maintenance performance and integrity of mine plant machinery used within the Ore Preparation unit.
The successful candidate will collaborate with maintenance, operations, technical specialists, contractors and equipment manufacturers to strengthen machinery strategies and improve equipment performance. The role requires significant mine plant reliability experience, strong mechanical engineering knowledge and the ability to influence teams across a complex energy operation.
About This Mine Plant Engineering Position
The Mine Plant Machinery Engineer will help Imperial develop and maintain a strong reliability culture across the Kearl asset. Although the position is based in Edmonton, the engineer will support programs and operational activities connected to mine plant machinery, particularly equipment used in ore preparation.
The role combines strategic reliability planning with practical engineering support. This includes reviewing equipment data, identifying recurring failures, improving maintenance programs and helping teams make informed repair, replacement and investment decisions. The engineer will work across several functions to ensure that machinery reliability initiatives are coordinated and aligned with operational priorities.
Key Areas of Responsibility
The position is responsible for improving machinery performance through engineering analysis, maintenance strategy development and cross-functional coordination. The successful candidate will also provide subject matter expertise to Imperial and ExxonMobil teams when support is required.
Reliability Strategy
Work with management to establish machinery reliability objectives, define improvement priorities and support measurable performance goals for mine plant equipment.
Performance Analysis
Review reliability and maintenance data, monitor equipment performance and identify recurring issues that may affect production, safety, cost or asset availability.
Failure Investigation
Lead Root Cause Failure Analysis activities for mine plant machinery and help teams implement corrective actions that reduce the likelihood of repeated failures.
Engineering Support
Provide mechanical engineering input for equipment designs, repairs and repair-versus-replace evaluations while considering reliability, technical feasibility and cost.
OEM Coordination
Work with original equipment manufacturers on machinery reliability projects, technical recommendations and potential equipment or component improvements.
Shutdown Support
Support planned shutdown activities and coordinate on-site work with contractors to help ensure machinery tasks are completed safely and effectively.
Equipment Reliability and Maintenance Improvement
A major focus of this position is improving the effectiveness of maintenance programs supporting mine plant machinery. The engineer will assess existing equipment strategies, evaluate performance trends and coordinate targeted improvements intended to strengthen availability and reduce avoidable maintenance costs.
The role also involves supporting equipment purchase specifications and ensuring that reliability considerations are addressed before machinery is selected or modified. By working with operations, maintenance and technical teams, the engineer will help integrate engineering recommendations into practical operating and maintenance processes.

Imperial is seeking candidates with an engineering degree, preferably in Mechanical Engineering or Mining Mechanical Engineering. Applicants must have at least eight years of experience working with mine plant equipment performance and reliability, together with a proven record of improving reliability culture.
