Software Development Engineer – Amazon Tax, Vancouver, BC

Amazon is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Software Development Engineer (SDE) to join the Amazon Tax Platform Services team in Vancouver, British Columbia. This full-time position is ideal for experienced developers who enjoy solving complex technical problems at scale, while contributing to critical infrastructure that supports global tax compliance.

As a Software Development Engineer, you will help design and implement distributed systems, contribute to technical architecture, and work across teams to deliver innovative solutions that have a global impact.

The Amazon Tax Platform team builds and operates services that compute taxes across every Amazon business and marketplace. This role offers the opportunity to solve deep technical challenges in distributed computing, scale, performance, and availability, while also having a direct impact on the customer experience.

You’ll work alongside some of the best minds in software development, participate in technical design discussions, and develop robust and scalable software that is used across Amazon globally.

Key Responsibilities for the Software Development Engineer

In this role, you’ll work closely with engineers, product managers, and tax professionals to develop tools and systems that scale with Amazon’s global operations.

• Design, develop, and maintain scalable and fault-tolerant distributed systems.
• Participate in architecture and design reviews, contributing to high-level planning and system design.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including tax operations, business stakeholders, and other engineering teams.
• Write clean, maintainable, and efficient code, with a focus on performance and scalability.
• Conduct thorough testing and peer code reviews, ensuring software quality and system stability.
• Mentor junior engineers and help maintain a strong engineering culture within the team.

Minimum Qualifications for the Software Development Engineer

Candidates must meet the following basic requirements to be considered for this position.

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
• 3+ years of professional experience in software development.
• Proficiency in at least one modern programming language, such as Java, C++, or C#.
• Strong computer science fundamentals, including data structures, algorithms, and object-oriented design.
• Experience building scalable distributed systems.

Preferred Qualifications for the Software Development Engineer

While not required, the following qualifications will give candidates a competitive edge.

• Master’s degree or higher in Computer Science or a related field.
