About the Robotics R&D Machinist Position

The Robotics R&D Machinist is responsible for producing precision components used in Tesla’s Optimus robotics development program. Working within a collaborative research environment, the successful candidate will operate a variety of CNC and manual machine tools while supporting prototype development and advanced engineering projects.

The position requires ownership of the complete machining process, beginning with engineering drawing review and continuing through programming, tooling selection, machine setup, inspection, dimensional adjustments, and final component delivery. Key Areas of Responsibility

CNC Machining

Set up and operate CNC lathes, milling machines, and grinding equipment to manufacture complex, high-precision engineering components.

Manual Machining

Operate manual lathes, milling machines, drill presses, and related equipment to complete machining operations and prototype work.

End-to-End Manufacturing

Manage every stage of production, including drawing review, CAM programming, tooling selection, machine setup, dimensional inspection, and process adjustments.

Manufacturing Process Development

Collaborate with manufacturing engineers to improve machining methods and develop reliable production processes for complex robotic components.

Equipment Maintenance

Apply 5S principles to improve organization, efficiency, cleanliness, standardization, and workflow throughout the machining laboratory.

Experience and Technical Requirements

Tesla prefers candidates who hold Red Seal certification or have equivalent machining experience. Applicants should be comfortable programming components using CAM software such as Esprit or HyperMill and producing precision parts with tolerances measured in microns.

The employer also requires a strong understanding of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing according to ASME Y14.5. Candidates should be capable of interpreting engineering drawings, inspecting finished components using measurement equipment, and making machining adjustments based on dimensional inspection data.

Work Environment, Compensation and Benefits

This is a full-time position based in Langley, British Columbia, within Tesla’s robotics research and development operations. Employees work alongside multidisciplinary engineering teams while using advanced machining equipment to support innovative manufacturing projects.

Tesla lists expected compensation of $21.84 to $44.10 CAD per hour, together with potential cash and stock awards.
